Building a Simple Marketing Plan on a Budget

Building a Simple Marketing Plan on a Budget

Start With What You Already Have

Before you spend a single pound, spend an hour with a pen and paper. Most small businesses already have more marketing assets than they realise, and they cost nothing to use.

  • Your existing customers. Write down the last twenty people who paid you. Where did they come from? If eight of them were recommendations, referrals are your best channel and deserve a proper system, not luck.
  • Your contact list. Phone numbers, email addresses, WhatsApp groups, the diary you keep behind the counter. That list is permission to talk to people who already trust you.
  • Your best stories. A tricky job you solved, a customer who came back after three years, a mistake you fixed properly. These are your marketing content, and they are more persuasive than any slogan.
  • Your reviews. If you have ten decent reviews online, you have a marketing team working for free. Ask every happy customer, politely, on the day they are happy.

Do this exercise honestly. You will probably find one or two channels doing all the work, and a scatter of effort going nowhere. That knowledge is worth more than a big advertising budget.

Choose Two Channels, Not Seven

The most common mistake I see is a business trying to be everywhere at once and doing all of it badly. It is far better to do two things consistently than six things occasionally.

Pick your two based on where your customers already spend their time and attention. A tradesperson serving a two-mile radius gets more from a local Facebook group and a well-placed leaflet than from a polished video channel. A cake maker selling celebration cakes might do better with a regular social post and a stall at the local market.

Ask yourself three questions for each channel you are considering:

  • Can I keep this up for six months? If the answer is no, drop it now.
  • Will this reach people who can actually buy from me? Reach is vanity; local buyers are sanity.
  • Do I know whether it worked? If you cannot tell, you cannot improve it.

Make Social Media Earn Its Keep

You do not need to post daily. Three posts a week, done properly, beats a fortnight of daily posts followed by silence.

A simple, repeatable mix works well for most small businesses:

  • Proof. Photos of finished work, before and after shots, a short note about what the job involved.
  • Personality. Something about you, your team, your workshop, the dog who sleeps under the desk.
  • Offer. A clear, specific reason to get in touch this week — a spring tidy-up, a two-week booking window, a free measurement visit.

Keep your captions plain and local. Mention the town, the estate, the road, the landmark. "Fitted a new boiler in Harborne this morning" will always outperform "professional heating solutions provider". Reply to every comment and message within a day where you can — a quick reply is worth more than a clever post.

Leaflets Still Work — If You Do Them Properly

Printed material has a bad reputation because most of it is lazy. Done well, it is one of the cheapest ways for a local business to be remembered.

Key decisions:

  • Size and quantity. A6 is cheap and easy to carry; 5,000 single-sided cards typically land somewhere between £60 and £120 depending on paper and finishing. Start there rather than ordering 20,000 of something untested.
  • One message per side. What you do, where you do it, one reason to call now, and a phone number big enough to read from a doorway.
  • Distribution matters more than design. 1,000 leaflets through doors on streets where you already work will outperform 5,000 dropped from a van across the whole town.
  • Track it. Use a simple code, a named offer, or just ask "where did you hear about us?" and note the answer. Without this, you will never know whether to do it again.

Partner With People Who Already Have Your Customers

Community partnerships are the most underused and most affordable marketing tool available to a small business. The principle is simple: find businesses and groups that serve the same people you do, without competing with you.

  • Cross-referrals. A plumber and an electrician, a florist and a wedding venue, a dog groomer and a vet. Agree to recommend each other properly, and make it easy with a stack of each other's cards.
  • Shared events. A joint open evening, a stall at a school fair, a demonstration at the local market. Split the cost and double the audience.
  • Sponsorship. A £50 prize for the village raffle or a junior football team buys goodwill and a mention to hundreds of local families. Choose causes your customers actually care about.
  • Local groups. Residents' associations, business breakfasts, church halls, allotment committees. Turn up, be useful, and let people meet you in person.

Be generous first. Pass on work, share other people's posts, recommend them without being asked. It comes back, reliably, and it costs nothing but attention.

Keep Score Without Fancy Tools

You do not need software to know whether your marketing is working. A notebook or a simple spreadsheet will do, as long as you actually fill it in.

At the end of each month, note three things: what you spent, roughly how many enquiries came in, and how many turned into paying work. That is it. After three months you will see patterns — perhaps the leaflet drop brought six jobs while the paid adverts brought two, or the Tuesday post always outperforms the Friday one.

Then do the hardest thing in small business marketing: stop the things that are not working. Reinvest that time and money into the one or two things that are. A simple plan you follow beats a clever plan you abandon, every single time.
